Searching for God
Many people wonder if God is real—and if so, which God is true. Most people in the world follow a religion. Even those who don’t often admit that they believe something might be out there.
Christians sometimes call this feeling the “God-shaped hole” in our hearts.
Imagine a children’s toy with different shapes that must fit into the right holes. In the same way, God has made us with a space in our hearts that only He can fill.
People try to fill that emptiness in many ways—through spiritual searching, material things, or what society offers—but nothing truly satisfies us except a real connection with the God who created us.
How Christians Understand the Search for God
When we look for God, it is not just a logical or scientific search. It begins in our hearts. Something deep within us pushes us to seek meaning, love, and truth.
We don’t find God only through logic, but by experiencing His love. When we feel God drawing close to us, our minds may be full of questions as we try to understand what our heart is experiencing.
The Message of Christianity
Christianity offers one of the most complete and historic explanations of life, faith, and the problems in our world.
The Bible says that when God first made the world, people lived in close relationship with Him. But humans wanted independence and turned away from God. This separation is what Christians call “sin.”
’Sin’ is anything that pulls us away from God. Because of sin, the world became broken and cursed.
Why the World Is Broken
Children often believe in God easily because their hearts are still soft and innocent. As we grow older, pain, corruption, and hatred can make our hearts harder. Some even blame God for these problems.
But God never gave up on us. Throughout history, He has spoken to people from every nation, showing His love and guiding those who were willing to listen. The Jewish faith records how God promised to one day forgive people’s sins so that we could be close to Him again.
What Forgiveness Really Means
Forgiving sin is more than just saying “sorry.” Sin has power—it controls human behavior and keeps us from living the pure life God created us for.
Some people reject purity because it feels impossible. Others are drawn to it because they sense that’s how life should be.
God didn’t only forgive our sins—He also gave us His Spirit to help us live close to Him again.
God’s Plan Through Jesus
God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to show His love for us. Jesus lived among us, then died at the hands of sinful people to lift the curse from the world. Through His death and resurrection, anyone who believes in Him can have a new heart—no longer empty, but filled with God’s presence.
God removed the curse in two ways:
- By showing His love—He came to us personally.
- By taking the punishment—He accepted the justice that human sin deserved.
An Example: Justice and Mercy
Imagine you break the law and are arrested. If the police let you go without punishment, there is no justice for the victims. But if you stay in prison forever, there is no hope.
Now imagine everyone in your country has broken the law and been arrested. Then an innocent person comes and says, “I will take the punishment for everyone, so justice is served, and hope can return.”
That is what Jesus did.
Yet only those who believe Him and accept His gift are set free.
Some reject it, some try to justify themselves, and others are angry that even guilty people are offered forgiveness. But God’s gift is available to all.
God Is Seeking You
If you feel aware of your mistakes or brokenness, and sense that God is calling you, know that He is seeking you. He wants you to know Him personally.
What Christianity Really Means
The word ‘Christianity’ describes people who have gone through this process—who have turned from sin and accepted God’s forgiveness. Some see it as a religion, but it is really a restored relationship with God.
Christianity is the largest faith in the world. It has deep historical roots (with Christian’s saying those roots are from the beginning), includes people from every culture, nation, demographic and takes many forms—some meet in homes, others in churches; some wear robes, others don’t.
Just as people disagree about politics, Christians sometimes disagree about details. But God is patient and continues to lead each heart.
Some people are ‘nominal christians’ meaning they do not follow God but identify with a Christian nation, just like in any religion. Some muslims drink alcohol and Hindus live wreck less lives, buddhists may murder… this means they are religious by name only and not living according to the beliefs they say they hold.
The Heart of Christian Belief
The central belief of Christianity is this:
- God seeks to restore people to himself.
- We can accept Gods calling by turning from sin and asking for his help.
- Jesus Christ—God’s Son—was a real person who lived on earth, died by crucifixion (a common Roman punishment), and rose from the dead in a miracle recorded by witnesses.
- After returning to heaven, He sent God’s Spirit to help and comfort His followers.
The Bible tells this story.
A New Heart
Once we were empty inside, but now God’s love fills our hearts. The “God-shaped hole” has been made whole again.
What is a Missionary?
Someone who believe God has asked them to do something on his behalf. In a sense, all Christian’s are missionaries trying to represent God on earth and do his will. Sometimes we fail and sometimes we make mistakes, but God still chooses to work with us as we follow him.
Some missionaries may help people in practical ways because God wants to show his love through that person.
Others may have a message from God to encourage or direct people. Others may want to tell people about God.
There are many ways God wishes to express himself on earth and designed humans to parter with him to do so. That’s what a missionary is.
How do I know God is calling me?
God calls everyone so it’s not a surprise of you are feeling called by God. He wants all people to return to his original design: that we would know him and work in the world together.
Often people feel a softening of their heart as God is calling them, they may be unable to explain what they are experiencing and fear sounding ‘unstable’ or ‘unusual’ to their friends and family. Yet the call does not stop.
Still God may send us signs through dreams, people we meet, circumstances or events in life. God is able to do this in anyway that pleases him as he is God. Our inability to hear is not a problem to him, however he only asks that we are willing to let him lead the way to him.
What about other religions?
So now we see there is only one truth the question is which truth is true? This is where logic does play an important role.
Imagine there was a crime and there were 10 witnesses. If everyone of them told a different story would you believe them all? In the same way truth cannot be many ways. God cannot say “do this”, and then “do that” if those two things contradict each other. Because God sent his son to us and said we must believe in him how can we accept another witness saying something else?
Some religions hide their lack of evidence around ‘great mysteries’. Imagine the witness to the crime used unspecific evidence and simply said, “you have to trust me”. We would be silly to do so. Some religions have no origin story and cannot explain with accuracy why the world was made and the situation today.
Some religions cannot explain why pain exists. Some cannot account for how humans spread accross the world. Some cannot give any true ‘experience’ but offer only faulty belief systems.
Christianity is not a religion in this way, instead it tells a story about humanity and the truth of the word we live in. In that context it points to Jesus being the answer. Don’t take my word for it, for whoever can talk you into something, there is one who can talk you out of it. Search out for yousf these matters. You must trust God is bigger than the confusion and ask him to lead you into all truth. That’s what he promises to do for us according to the Bible.
Please also understand that all people should be respected. Because someone has a different belief system than us we do not not agree with them or hate them. Perhaps you were raised in a different system, then it would be good to understand your beliefs and ask questions.
Are Christian’s Perfect?
No. Just because we turn from our sin, accept Gods forgiveness and receive his spirit to help us live purely we still have a choice every day.
Jesus calls this choice “carrying your cross” which means to chose to kill your sinful ways everyday. What makes it hard is that we are surrounded by a world system and people who are intent on maintaining their independence from God. They offer us distractions and temptations.
However the Holy Spirit helps us in powerful ways and often our lives are transformed by an ongoing process:
Imagine planting a flowers. Would you see them bloom overnight? In the same way Gods Holy Spirit is at work within us through time to heal, help and mend us to become pure.
We may have developed bad habits, wrong thinking about ourself or others. These things God will heal as we follow him. Of course sometimes this can happen instantly by way of a miracle but God wants to help us untangle mess as it teaches us to develop character and strength.
It’s like having to climb a hill every day with no help, then one day God sends a helper to carry your bags. You’re still a human capable of sin, but the ease to walk out your life is so much easier without embracing sin and his spirit empowerment.
What about evil?
Christian’s believe that part of the reason we chose to walk away from God is due to temptation from evil. This evil is embodied in a fallen spirit called Satan.
He seeks to draw man away from God to worship himself, often posing as ‘good’ while in reality is the root cause of all the suffering in the world.
Satan is not God and does not have his power but because God gave the world to humans we have the authority to let Satans work be done on earth or Gods work. God will not override this decision because it would mean he has to force us to love him and do good, and love cannot be forced.
As such Satan is a fallen spirit and the leader of evil spirits who are active in the world today. Evil loves to hide, cover itself and pose as good, but Gods love and light exposes this as we draw near to him.
Often Satan and his demons will pose as helpful spirits to gain access to trust. They may pose as gods or promos blessings as a way to trick humans.
Jesus has given us his power over such evil, as when he died, he took away the punishment of our sin and so the ‘jailer who held us captive’ can no longer punish us should we choose Jesus way.
Why is the world a hard place?
God never intended the world to be a hard place to live. When our ancestors walked away from God they set in motion a world that could not live the way God intended.
Add to this fact that Satan, an evil being, wants to rule the world. This combination cursed the world and its people. We may not believe in curses and evil beings but yet we see their evidence around us. Some people have become evil in their intentions demonstrating their alliance with evil itself.
We may also aware of supernatural or spiritual happenings, something negative but always hidden. This is what Christian’s believe is the evidence of a spiritual war between good and evil.
